Texas Budget Woes Cause AgriLife Extension Service Job Losses

Crashing Down In a recent news release, Texas Comptroller Susan Combs, in announcing the annual school supply sales tax holiday (Aug. 20-22), stated that the state economy continues to recover. She recently described Texas government as a successful business. It is one which lavishly gives taxpayer money to big corporations.

However, officials have recently completed the task of notifying employees whose jobs with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service will end between now and Oct. 31.

High Wheat Yield Gluts Rolling Plains Elevators

High yields and big variations in the price offered to farmers in the Texas Rolling Plains have contributed to gluts of wheat at co-op elevators. (U.S. Department of Agriculture photo by Scott Bauer) Rain came to Texas, relieving drought conditions in many areas. It also slowed the wheat harvest in the Rolling Plains, but this year that might be a good thing, according to Texas AgriLife Extension Service personnel.

2010 Susan G. Komen Tarrant County Race For The Cure Saturday

Komen The 2010 Susan G. Komen Tarrant County Race for the Cure will be held in downtown Fort Worth's Sundance Square this Saturday. The Race for the Cure is the largest charitable 5K Race in Tarrant County. With more going on this year than ever before, it is expected to draw more than 15,000 people to the downtown area. The race is the largest fundraiser for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tarrant County, and 75 percent of the funds raised support breast cancer education, detection and treatment in Tarrant County, with the remaining 25 percent going to national research initiatives.

Ivie Reservoir has produced nine largemouth bass weighing 13 pounds or more that have been entered into the Toyota ShareLunker program. All were special fish to the anglers who caught them, but the ninth was a little more special than the others: Sam Callaway of Corpus Christi will collect $500 a pound for his catch, a total of $6,670.

Hiking Thru The XIT

The author is hiking through ranch land about twenty miles south of Higgins, Texas, near the Texas portion of the Black Kettle National Grasslands. It was the end of February. I’d volunteered most of the month at Caprock Canyons State Park, and it was time to leave. A cold I’d picked up had mostly gone away, and several of those last days had been sunny and beautiful. I packed my bag and a box of things to mail home and went to bed with the knowledge that a new sunrise would send me on my way. I would have seen it too had it not been for the blizzard.
