Vocals/Instruments/Tune By Tim Kleine
Tim Kleine wrote and performed the tune to W. Leon Smith’s lyrics of “They Drown the Bullets in Blood.” The combined mix has been described as the quintessential “anthem of our times” — which crosses several genres. Kleine (pronounced kliney) is a lifelong resident of Central Texas where he enjoys performing and listening to old country music. He started playing drums in a country band at the age of 15 and, with encouragement from his parents, Erwin and Doris Kleine, learned to play other instruments such as the piano, saxophone, guitar, and bass guitar.
Kleine played in a country band until he was 21. He credits his love of music to his parents.
He says that co-producing “They Drown the Bullets in Blood” in the studio was a fun, but nerve-racking, experience.

W. Leon Smith, publisher of The Lone Star Iconoclast, penned the lyrics of “They Drown the Bullets in Blood,” which was followed by the creation of the haunting tune by Tim Kleine.
The Iconoclast became internationally known when it went against the grain and endorsed John Kerry over George Bush for President in 2004, even though the Iconoclast is published in Bush’s hometown. Boycotts and threats followed.
Smith is a native Texan whose great-great-great-great uncle, Erastus (Deaf) Smith, led the way for Texas’ independence at the Battle of San Jacinto, following the Alamo. Erastus was General Houston’s most trusted scout and spy.
W. Leon Smith has published newspapers for decades, is a former multi-term mayor, and was an independent candidate for the U.S. Senate.
